Good Things in Bad Times

Posted by Mike Stankus on Mon, Jun 01, 2009 @ 08:40 AM

Back when the bottom fell out of the economy, I wondered how the upcoming bad times would affect people's behavior. Having observed much hubris, self-importance, and inconsideration in the past twenty years, my expectations were low.

In my personal observation, just the opposite has happened. I can't remember a time when people have been more humble, considerate, and willing to help others. Not many individuals (or businesses) are better off financially compared to a year ago. Yet instead of whining, individuals and businesses are adjusting.

A while back, I read several books on the depression and World War II. I was struck by how people pulled together in these difficult times and lived their lives with dignity. I'm glad to see courage in the face of adversity was passed to our generation.

Let's hope these bad times end soon but the good behavior stays with us for a long time.
