Front Line Blog - American Idle

Posted by Mike Stankus on Mon, Apr 20, 2009 @ 09:32 AM
Since the U.S. economy hits the skids this past fall, most companies have shut down spending and are conserving cash. To state the obvious, this is not an optimal time to be in sales.

For the first time in years, sales executives have time on their hands. Some are unemployed, many are prohibited to travel, most don't see the necessity nor the incentive to work 70 -hour weeks.

So how to make the most of this idle time? I polled 20+ executives last week to see how this newfound time is being invested. The top three answers:

1) Spending more time with family
2) Building a larger, better professional network
3) Volunteering (non profit or just helping out those in need)

I found these conversations to be personally uplifting. Instead of pining for the good old days, people view this time as a gift. Many confirmed that despite the falling incomes and uncertain business climate, life is becoming more fulfilling.

I would like to hear from others who are making the most out of their idle time.....
